Mdou Moctar lament Africa’s struggles on “Funeral for Justice”, the title track of their new album

Nigerien quartet Mdou Moctar, the band fronted by the leader of the same name, have announced their new album: Funeral For Justice arrives on 3 May through Matador.

Moctar says: “This album is really different for me. Now the problems of terrorist violence are more serious in Africa. When the US and Europe came here, they said they’re going to help us, but what we see is really different. They never help us to find a solution.”

The first taste comes in the form of the title track, a zipping and boisterous blast of punk-inflected African rock. Despite the clear disgruntlement at play in the song, “Funeral For Justice” still strikes as bold and joyous through communal effort. There is the quartet’s unbelivably tight interplay and the gang vocals that signal their unity in the fight for justice for their home.
