Today marks the day that none other than, well, Holy Other makes his surprise return. Essentially quiet since 2012’s breakthrough Held, the sudden resurgence of such an enigmatic and commanding presence is intriguing and exciting indeed.
To mark the occasion, he’s simultaneously revealed the impending release of his sophomore album, Lieve, and shared its title track (along with its artwork, pictured above). Developing the album across an extended stay within the Bidston Observatory on the Wirral, Holy Other sought out the natural acoustics of the cavernous building to his advantage, recording and resampling sounds that would form the backbone of Lieve.
The title track itself is a sonic plunge into uncertain waters, haunting, surreal, striking, and frightening, by turns. Indeed, that’s a lot of adjectives, but simply give the song a play and see if they don’t all come to mind.
