For at least quite a damn lot of us, the pandemic has had quite the mental impact. That viral introvert video? I’d bet my last dollar it’s stopped ringing true for even the most closed-off among us, with self-isolation and loneliness twisting into a sort of self-imposed solitude. We’d been alone so long it was hard not to obsess over minute personal things that we may not pay any mind whatsoever in a healthier mind-state. Friendships become hard to maintain for these sorts.
Montreal-based singer-songwriter Laraw has delivered an anthem for those that feel this sort of confusion and disconnection, the aptly named “This is How I Lost My Friends”.
Speaking on the tune, she bluntly shares, “Last year was fucked. I just stopped talking to everyone because I had nothing left to say. People who’ve known me for a while know that I don’t like going out or hanging out with anyone to begin with … but last year was different. I needed someone to ask me how I was doing and no one did – no one could, really. We were all going through it. I tend to blame myself a lot whenever there’s any problem in my life. “This is How I Lost My Friends” is an apology to everyone I may have hurt but also to myself for not taking care of me the way I should have.“
“This is How I Lost My Friends” is partly chiptune inspired (Laraw is a heavy gamer, finding influence in the likes of the Spyro soundtrack) with a healthy helping of Avril Lavigne attitude. Laraw effortlessly blends these seemingly disparate influences into an irresistible ode to friendship and forgiveness.
