Italian techno producer Musin examines the relationship between perception and reality in “Self Frequency” (BPM Premiere)

Musin is an Italian-born, London-based producer of experimental tech-house, who has released his debut EP, Perception, today on new label Ambient Zone Records. A graduate in Sound Engineering, Musin has spent much of his musical life considering the relationship between what we perceive and what is reality. This is what he continues to interrogate on the five-track Perception, and the video for “Self Frequency”, which we bring you today. He says:

“Inspired by the short movies of the avant-garde artist Richard Sierra, Perception is based on the interpretation of reality through time, space and matter. Perception has its own abstract logic and this makes it necessary to adapt verbal or mathematical terms in ordinary life. Time, scale and three-dimensional vagueness are usually accepted as interpretation of reality and the experience of self-reflection shows up the contradiction in the perception of the subject itself in the objective expression.”

This is a large theoretical concept to approach through music, but Musin’s brand of techno plays with dimensions and space; as he pulls back the sound for a more melodic ambient passage, the depth of production beckons you to lean in. Then, at the next moment, you’ll find yourself amid swirling bright colours all around your head, breathing inside the sonic space. Listening to Musin’s productions is not simply an aural experience, but one that awakens all of your senses, and asks you to stretch out and try to touch, taste, smell and see the music.

This polychromatic and immersive experience is furthered in the video for Perception‘s lead track, “Self Frequency”. As the ornately propulsive track plays, we’re invited to invest ourselves in a world of continual blossoming, to appreciate the delicacy and detail of the natural world. Musin’s production enhances this connection, almost as if it’s facilitating a form of understanding between us and the natural world, his percolating beats like an unspoken language between listener and the world around them.

Musin’s Perception EP is out today on Ambient Zone Records. You can follow him on Twitter, Facebook, and Soundcloud.
