Listen/Download: Mesita – XYXY EP

Kingston

The bad news is that the new Mesita album, Future Proof, is no longer on the immediate agenda. After working away for months, and releasing some wonderfully forward-thinking tracks, James Cooley came to the realization that he wasn’t going to slam dunk that basket he’d hoped to. “I’d moved on from the subject I was writing about, the energy had gone elsewhere. To keep it as the focus was treading water, stuck on something not worth revisiting,” he writes. Such seems to be the way for Cooley, as similar experiences fumbled him when he released his Living/Breathing and No Worries EPs.

The good news is that he’s not given up on everything he’s done. He might have chiselled everything out of the hole he wanted to, but the result is the four-track XYXY EP, which features the tremendous title track, “Hostages,” the recently revealed “Kingston,” and the new-to-our-ears “Alone Is Okay.” Fitting with his generosity, he’s released the EP as a free download, which you can (and should) take advantage of by visiting his Bandcamp page. All is not lost, though, as Cooley intends to get back to work next month, and knowing him, he’ll be treating our ears to something else before we’re even considering weaning ourselves off of this EP.
