Singer-songwriter Kristin Errett learned to play the piano in her early teens and soon began writing songs and performing for family and friends in her hometown of Fairfield, Connecticut. Displaying a preternatural ability to wring sugary, ear-catching melodies from her piano, Errett draws considerable inspiration from her own formative influences, which includes Stevie Nicks and Carole King. And though her music is redolent of the 60’s and 70’s songwriters that she so obviously admires, there is a pop sheen that places her music firmly in a modern context. Errett would find herself in good company alongside artists such as Regina Spektor, Norah Jones, and Imogen Heap. Her recently released debut record, Confessions of a Songbird, is full of the heart-on-sleeve earnestness common to her musical heroes but never feels dishonestly sentimental or emotionally manipulative.
She has just released the video for Confessions-cut “Sparks,” and its’ narrative details the first days of a burgeoning love, the eventual dissolution of that love, and the couple being given another chance to change their future by going back to the beginning of their relationship. Errett’s confident vocals thread through the piano-led pop melody and jazz-y percussion and serve as the perfect backdrop for this tale of redemption and alternate timelines. Curiously enough, a homemade time machine plays a large part in the reconciling of their differences. Regret and consequence are just a few of the things which help to shape our lives, but who wouldn’t want a second chance to make things right?
