It’s been some time since the Huntington Beach, California-based indie pop outfit Hellogoodbye released their debut album, Zombies! Aliens! Vampires! Dinosaurs!, back in 2006. And far from relying solely on the goodwill that their fans seem all too willing to extend based on the bright pop catharsis of that debut, they’ve continued to refine their inimitable fusion of electro-pop and melodic indie rock aesthetics. Combining a knack for drawing out ear-tugging melodies and vibrant pop harmonies from the most well-worn genres and sounds and by having a clear understanding that pop music yearns to be inclusive, Hellogoodbye peddle their ever shifting pop wares to their legion of fans without sounding staid or creatively inert. And on their upcoming album, Everything Is Debatable (out October 29th via Old Friends Records), the band pair bright, strummy guitars with quick bursts of punchy percussion and melodies that stretch out for miles. Produced by Joe Chiccarelli (The White Stripes, My Morning Jacket), with help from Hellogoodbye singer Forrest Kline and Carlos De La Garza (M83, Paramore), it’s the sound of a band comfortable in their own skin and pushing forward through ever widening pop landscapes.
Recently, Kline stopped off at BalconyTV in Brooklyn to perform the band’s recent single, “(Everything Is) Debatable,” with just an acoustic guitar. Stripped of its technicolor beats and layered instrumentation (not to mention the pop bombast surrounding its ridiculously catchy chorus), the song feels far more intimate and weaves an earnest narrative bereft of artifice or overt sentimentality. And while the dancier, pop rhythms of the original did feel like a good compliment to the song’s rapid lyrical detours, broken down to its bare skeleton, the song feels far more communal and displays an organic heart-on-sleeve attitude that creates an even more gut punch folk impact. And if the band wants to bring this minimalist approach to this song — or any others — on their forthcoming tour with Paramore and Metric, I doubt anyone would mind. Check out the band’s full tour itinerary below the video.
Beats Per Minute is pleased to premiere the live performance video of “(Everything Is) Debatable” from Hellogooodbye’s upcoming album, Everything Is Debatable.
