Craigslist has been used by many people for many different things — among them, the formation of Brooklyn rockers The Assembly Line. With the release of their 2009 debut album, Graves Like Oceans, the band — consisting of singer Thornfin Nguyen, guitarist Chris Potter, bassist Zach Falkow, and drummer Josh Ridley — started churning out heart-on-sleeve earnestness and memorably arcing melodies that stick in your brain long after the last notes have faded back into your speakers (or earbuds, or however you choose to absorb your music). But having shared the stage with artists like Maroon 5 and Wiz Khalifa, The Assembly Line are no strangers to standing in the spotlight and drawing the audience into their shifting modern rock soundscapes. And on their upcoming EP, The Places We Leave Behind (due out September 17th), they’re ready to tackle the stage once again.
On their latest single, “Tonight (There’s Only Us)”, the band plays around with the catch-and-release rhythmic dynamics of the song (and their aesthetic in general), while layering chiming guitar lines and spitfire riffage together with Nguyen’s emotive vocals and a thumping percussion. Continually building to some expected catharsis, the track rarely stops to catch its breathe, and when it does, you can still feel that draw — that forward momentum — pulling you forward. With a melody that you’re likely to be humming hours later, “Tonight (There’s Only Us)” looks ready to pull the band onto even larger stages and in front of even more massive audiences.
