Nothing about Kurt Vile’s recent Recommended album, Smoke Ring For My Halo, speaks to technological innovation. In fact, one of the great appeals of the record is how grassroots it all feels, as if it had been a long time since we had heard a great guitar-driven record with genuine songs and thoughtful words. This makes the video for “Baby’s Arms” all the more surprising, as it is filmed entirely on the Windows phone as part of a promotion with the company. What do we learn from Todd Cole’s clip? You can light that motherfucker on fire and it still works! Best phone ever!
