I have to admit that I am delightfully surprised with the positive reception that Eleanor Friedberger’s first solo record is receiving. Not that it is undeserved, but often when an experimental artist makes a considerable turn towards the norm, it is not met with the most open of arms. But, Last Summer still bubbles with all the quirks of the great Fiery Furnaces records, but with a new found restraint.
In the clip for “Roosevelt Island,” Friedberger takes notes about the most mundane of activities, all while looking like the hipster poster child she has been for the past decade. Check it out below and look for Last Summer on Merge Records, out now.
