We recently brought you “Page Before” from the excellent Venus Furs, the musical moniker of Montreal’s Paul Kasner. With the release of his debut album Venus Furs less than a month away, he has just shared another new track called “Paranoia”.
The new single does exactly what its title suggests: excoriating walls of guitars enclose Kasner’s anxious vocals, presenting a vibrant sonic representation of “Paranoia”. Across five and a half minutes of rampant psych-indie, the tension doesn’t let up, with Kasner’s imagery only getting more doomy and hallucinogenic as we tread further into his mind. By the end of “Paranoia” we feel emotionally wrung out – but invigoratingly so, as if this cathartic rock song has just vanquished all those persistent fears that have been dragging us down.
Kasner says on “Paranoia” and its video:
“I wrote Paranoia as an examination of mental health, attempting to explore the feelings of depression and anxiety. The video attempts to capture the associated feelings of isolation and alienation, running after and away from yourself, and the discomfort of being alone whether in a crowd or by yourself. Coincidentally, it was filmed just before social distancing was put into effect – a foreshadowing to the isolation we are all currently experiencing.”
You can watch “Paranoia” below, or listen to the full-length version of the track on your preferred streaming platform.
Venus Furs’ debut album Venus Furs comes out on July 10. You can follow Venus Furs on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
