Track Premiere: Louis Matteo – “Blossom”

Louis Matteo - Patchwork Pattern

Multi-instrumentalist and Ohio native Louis Matteo’s musical education started early–when at the age of 9, he began picking out melodies by ear on his grandmother’s keyboard.  This need to understand music drove him through countless bands as a teenager and led to the release of his debut EP in 2007.  In 2011, he took the inheritance he received from his late grandmother and used it fund his career as a musician.  The last few years for Matteo have been heavy with touring dates and have provided him plenty of fodder for his upcoming collection of late-90’s alternative rock inspired songs.  Patchwork Pattern is due out April 30th via Neon Castle Records.

The 90’s rock/pop churn of “Blossom,” the latest single from Matteo, recalls the giddy melodies and think guitar lines of artists like Fountains of Wayne and Matthew Sweet.  Drawing on alternative rock influences from all corners of the genre, the song has all the hallmarks of radio friendly bands of that time but seems a bit more insistent and anxious, as Matteo’s assertive voice glides through the track with a casual ease that belies the appearance of an occasional punch of gritty electric guitar or the saccharine choruses of harmonized ohh’s and ahh’s.  Matteo knows enough to realize that merely retreading his influences will wear thin very quickly, but by adding something more to the mix, as he does on “Blossom,” he manages to instill the song with a sense of musical history and continual forward momentum.

Beats Per Minute is pleased to premiere the latest single “Blossom” from Louis Matteo’s upcoming record Patchwork Pattern.
