Kait Lawson comes descended from a long line of strong women singers who never bent or bowed under to anything that life threw at them. Taking her cue from country progenitors such as Loretta Lynn and Tammy Wynette–while also sharing much with more recent artists like Shelby Lynn and Caitlin Rose–Lawson empties her heart into her songs of love and loss, lust and indifference. Her debut album Until We Drown was released this week via Madjack Records and is a thorough dissection of Lawson’s own personal experiences using her own inimitable and imaginative narration. She has surrounded herself with an impressive roster of backing musicians, including Steve Selvidge (The Hold Steady), Dave Cousar (Al Green), Sam Shoup (John Legend), and others.
She has just released the latest song from the album, and “Take Your Charge” is a casually remorseful tale of love lost and looking back. As much a rallying call as it is a plea to take responsibility for our own actions, the song is carried along on a steady, shuffling drum beat and bright acoustic accompaniment, which softens the often biting lyrics and intent. Lawson has the natural ability to temper her own lyrical diatribes with a cooing, persuasive voice, and this curious dichotomy allows her the leeway to condemn while simultaneously reaching out to the listener with an offer of help.
