Boasting one of the most impressive musical educations in recent memory, violinist Judy Kang first picked up her instrument at the age of four and went on win competitions in her first year of playing. Auditioning for the Curtis Institute of Music when she was 11, with a broken wrist no less, she became their youngest graduate ever when she was 17. Two years later she earned her masters from Julliard and went on two graduate with honors from the Manhattan School of Music. Having risen so quickly, she soon attracted the attention of artists who felt that her unique talents would fit well within their own musical spheres. She has played with the Ryuichi Sakamoto Trio and was brought on board for Lady Gaga’s Monster Ball world tour. Splicing the traditional with the contemporary, Kang’s sound has been been said to channel “Grimes on a Stradivarius.” The latest song from her upcoming self-released debut, “Dream” shows a subdued Kang singing alongside her gently plucked violin. It’s a far cry from some of the more bombastic music that she has previous worked on, but it is beautifully subtle and carries itself with a grace which clearly shows that she knows when to reach for the rafters and when to slow down and pluck the heartstrings of her listeners as easily as she does her violin.
