Originally conceived as a solo project for Colorado native and multi-instrumentalist Peter Spear, Empty Chairs blossomed into a full band shortly after the release of the band’s self-titled debut EP. Drawing in fellow musicians Whitney Broadstreet and Matthew O’Koren, Empty Chairs were an official trio and quickly set out to begin the recording of their debut full-length. Drawing on the impressionistic musical details of bands like Animal Collective and Grizzly Bear, along with a hefty dose of atmospheric dream pop, the band meticulously sketched out the details of their debut record Caveat Emptor — which is due out November 5th. Composing intricate patterns of swirling psychedelic pop, Empty Chairs thread together influences as disparate as Japanese horror films, Vincent Van Gogh, and an un-ironic appreciation of that often unfairly maligned genre, Chillwave.
For our latest glimpse into the world of Caveat Emptor, the band has chosen to release the expansive and hazy dream pop-influenced “Eyelashes.” Spooling out in waves of euphoric nostalgia, the track recalls the shimmering pop of late 80’s/early 90’s 4AD. Equal parts synthetic beats, half-remembered memories, and gauzy guitar lines, the band spends the time here indulging in and paying homage to a wealth of musical influences. But not content to simply show off their obviously extensive record collections, they use these sounds to create something unique, while also feeling redolent of their own musical heroes. A fitting soundtrack to the last weeks of summer, “Eyelashes” will make you reminisce about the greatest things that happened to you this year but also a bit saddened that they’ve passed.
