After forming and breaking up within the span of a few years back in the late ’90s, British indie rockers Panchiko are readying their new album, Ginkgo, for release on April 4. The band slipped into obscurity following their brief tenure together but were reintroduced to a wider audience when a 4chan user found their demo CD in a thrift store in 2016 and spread it across various message boards. Upon learning of their delayed fame, the band reformed and have been busy recording new music and getting ready for a North American tour in May and June.
Their latest single, “Shandy in the Graveyard”, is a collaboration with New York rapper billy woods (one half of Armand Hammer) and is a reflective ballad reminiscent of Beth Orton or Dido, with airy vocals merging with hazy electronic atmospheres before woods’ clear rhymes shine through the fog-shrouded landscape. It’s a curious partnership to be sure, but it works, offering a snapshot of the how genres started to become extremely fluid in the late ’90s.
