After the acclaim of their self-titled debut album, it now seems that indie rock supergroup The Hard Quartet — Emmett Kelly, Stephen Malkmus, Matt Sweeney, and Jim White — are not ready to rest on their laurels just yet. They’ve just released a new digital double single consisting of “Lies (Something You Can Do)” and “Coreopsis Trail”, the former a new song recorded last July in New York City and the latter being an unreleased track taken from the sessions held during the recording of their debut record. Both songs are dense riff factories that combine churning rhythms and propulsive melodies, though they approach their respective sonic altitudes in slightly different ways.
“‘Lies (Something You Can Do)’ is a credo that states that one must NOT only be a complete dick in the quest for modern survival,” explains Kelly. “I guess ‘Coreopsis Trail’ is a reflection of this phenomenon,” he continues. “On morning runs, excessive cellular oxygenation permits a natural euphoria akin to a glandular spasm famously described as a ‘micro death.’ Similar results can be achieved by the murder of one’s ego, mental disorder, and/or the ill-advised usage of drugs.”
