On the cusp of releasing their long-awaited new album How Lost this Friday on Invada, Bristol-outfit The Fauns have unveiled the icy and nimble “Shake Your Hair”. The song is a good indicator of the band’s notable stylistic shift, forgoing their erstwhile shoegaze leanings for a more electronic coldwave/industrial direction, akin to bands like Ladytron, PVA and The KVB.
The band had the following to say about the song: “The Fauns wander into a BDSM club. Lyrically darker than usual but vague as is our way. This track came together after a viewing of ‘Dogs Don’t Wear Pants’ directed by Jukka-Pekka Valkeapää (a beautiful but difficult watch, highly recommended).”
The cinematic Roberto Vivancos-directed video seems like an extension of that, illustrating forms of therapy suitable in daylight and The Fauns’ more natural habitat: the night.
We meet a psychologist in his late 30s/early 40s, listening to his clients’ problems on a time lapse sequence. Obviously, the man has inner demons of his own, as he clutches a private note saying: “Words disintegrate. They fall apart, splintered on the ground.” The man alleviates the unresolved trauma which words can’t heal by forging a master/slave dynamic with a BDSM performer. After multiple visits, their role playing decorum shatters gradually, unfolding in a gesture of care, understanding and gratitude.
