Sub Pop may not be the most predictable home for some of the most interesting hip hop being made right now, but with the imminent release of the Shabazz Palaces album and now the announcement of the signing of Spoek Mathambo, Sub Pop is proving to be just as adept in this genre as they are in the indie rock world.
Spoek Mathambo is a 25-year old South African rapper who is pushing something called Afro-futurism. If you are like me and have no idea what this means, give single “Put Some Red On It” a spin (we’ve included it below). The song will be featured on a Put Some Red On It EP that will be released in late-July, complete with remixes of the track by Shabazz Palaces and Machinedrum.
