Samia has announced the release of her third album, Bloodless, on April 25 via Grandy Jury. Recorded in North Carolina, the record was made in collaboration with producers Caleb Wright and Jake Luppen, ands features songwriting contributions from Christina Lee Hutson and Raffaela.
The album reckons with unsolved mysteries, questions relating to spiritual awareness, the complicated nature of femininity, and the occasional cattle mutilation. She veers between indie pop opuses and skeletal folk stories, searching for what lies beneath layers of constructed reality, the true self buried beneath the weight of the world.
“I’ve spent the past two decades unintentionally conflating an abstract idea of men with my understanding of God,” Samia explains. “The person I became in order to impress this imagined figure is inseparable from who I am today. A significant part of my personality was built around traits and behaviors I believed—whether through observation or hearsay—men would like. With this album, I’ve tried to confront that head-on.“
On lead single “Bovine Excision”, she opens with airbrushed acoustic guitar and picaresque details of younger years before setting into something a bit more muscular, a bit more ferocious and capable of rending bodies limb from limb. Her voices rises and drifts along this landscape of fractured expectations and draws from a well of intense introspection to channel her energy into dismantling the interior structures of her subconscious. She’s breaking down the unnecessary and self-defeating mental frameworks that we all must reckon with as we grow older, developing a refined perspective on the mechanisms that allow us to evolve as firmer truths replace generational assumptions. We cast aside all pretense, all situational personalities, in search of something beyond the empty vacuum of social and physical expectations.
“I was drawn to the phenomenon of bloodless cattle mutilation as a metaphor for self-extraction – this clinical pursuit of emptiness,” she says.
