It’s been 40 years since the Plastic Ono Band has performed live in front of an audience. Yoko Ono, although perhaps best known for her status as the wife of John Lennon, has always been a respectable avant-garde artist in her own right. On February 16, she will return to the stage with her Plastic Ono Band for a one-time performance at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York.
Joining her for the performance will be her son Sean Lennon and a couple of original members, namely Eric Clapton and bassist Klaus Voorman. Japanese musicians Cornelius, Yuka Honda, and Haruomi Hosono are among those who will also be performing as members of the band.
The roster for this one-time event is, simultaneously, both chock-full of Ono’s contemporaries and modern artists no doubt inspired by Ono. Musicians set to perform include Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth, Martha Wainwright, Mark Ronson, Scissor Sisters, Paul Simon and his son Harper Simon, and Bette Midler.
That last one is a bit of a head-scratcher within the context of the other artists, but I’m sure Bette is a Yoko Ono fan just like the rest of them.
