It seems as though it’s been a long time since Okkervil River released something new. In fact it’s only been two years since their last proper album, but when you consider that The Stand-Ins came out as a high-quality quick-fire double with The Stage Names you can understand our anxiousness at wanting to hear something new.
Well it appears that there is something potentially new in the near future. Thanks to the band’s updates via their twitter we know that they’ve been hard at work on their as-yet untitled sixth studio album, but yesterday it was announced that a new single entitled “Mermaid” is set to be released by the band next month.
The announcement did not make any mention of an album that it would be tied to, but considering what we know it isn’t too much of a stretch to assume that it is the first single from an upcoming album. Or is it? In fact Okkervil River have released the song “Mermaid” before, on a soundtrack for a film called ‘In Search Of A Midnight Kiss’ and you can hear it below.

We’d like to hope that the version that will be released on February 8th via Jagjaguwar will be a new, rerecorded or reworked version but at this point we’re unsure. The single will also feature a song called “Walked Out On A Line” that Sheff performed at a solo show in New York last year. Check out the video of that below.
