I was already excited for the Ariel Pink tour this summer, but now that I’ve heard some material from supporting act Magic Kids, my interest in the tour is at an all time high. It will be interesting to see how the bedroom power-pop kids from Memphis mesh with the creepy king of lo-fi, whether the tour feels like two separate concerts or the bands eventually feel like an extension of each other.
If this new single is any indication, however, the crowds who came to see Ariel Pink might be singing along to Magic Kids by the end of their set. “Summer” is a terrifically beautiful pop song, mixing a string arrangement in the opening a-la Arcade Fire, then bursting into a lyrically driven shoegaze hook, reminding me instantly of Princeton.
At barely under four minutes, the track never loses its appeal, refocusing on looping vocals towards the end and various booming drum buildups to seemingly reset the listeners attention. Grab the mp3 below and set aside eight minutes, as you’ll want to play this song on repeat. Also, look for the album on True Panther at the end of August.
