Meridian Brothers share the contemplative tropical synth prayer “Cumbia de la fuente”

Meridian Brothers, the Colombian musical project helmed by Eblis Alvarez, will be releasing their new album Cumbia Siglo XXI at the end of next week, and today they’ve shared one final teaser. It’s called “Cumbia de la fuente”, and Alvarez says:

“‘Cumbia de la fuente’ is a stopping point of the whole theme of the record, both in lyrics and in sound concept. The song is a prayer and an amulet, a search for something that modern human beings are not used to do, due to mechanisation and modern industrial societies. A scream to the nowhere, looking for some answer, which is not given by scientific fetishism nor the political argument, nor the philosophic reason.

Even if your Spanish can’t follow the existential spirals of thought that Alvarez displays on “Cumbia de la fuente”, the feelings of yearning and determination for change still come resounding out. While measured percussion and Alvarez’s emotive voice form the structure of the song, there are plenty of other sounds at play to suck you in. Melodic guitar lines, rainbows of patterned synths, music box melodies and rippling atmospherics all populate “Cumbia de la fuente”, making it a true brain-massaging delight – hooking you into the agitated human emotion at the core.

Meridian Brothers’ new album Cumbia Siglo XXI is out next week on August 21 through Bongo Joe Records. They’ve also recently put together a mix for CRACK, which is like going crate digging with Alvarez and gives plenty of clues as to the influences at play – check it out here.
