Meljoann explores seedy workplace pressures on alt-pop banger “Overtime”

Brighton-based Irish pop producer Meljoann is releasing a new album called HR this summer, and following recent single “O Supervisor” comes today’s new offering “Overtime”. She says:

“‘Overtime’ is about the emotional labour we do, under gendered systems of control that thrive in the workplace. It tells the story of a woman alienated from her own survival instincts, who is subjugated by a predatory boss.”

Despite the workplace theme of her singles and album, Meljoann’s new music is anything but stuffy and boring. “Overtime” bounds forward on a meaty kick and blocky synths, while trickling atmospherics frame her effervescent vocal. If you didn’t pay attention to the words, you might think “Overtime” is just a fun pop jam – something like Beyoncé’s “Beautiful Nightmare” with a UK garage twist – but closer inspection reveals all sorts of sordid details in Meljoann’s tale. From the boss’s secret pictures, to the depressing innuendo “They’re sucking you to corporate hole”, to the “overpaid cock”, there’s seediness oozing out of every line. That Meljoann manages to carry it all off without sacrificing the song’s irresistible rhythm and indelible melody is pretty impressive – and just makes it even more replayable.
