Mannequin Pussy fantasize about destructive young love on “Nothing Like”

Philadelphia heroes Mannequin Pussy are homing in on the release of their new album I Got Heaven on March 1. With less than a month to wait, they’ve shared another new single “Nothing Like”, along with a crazy AI video. Vocalist Marissa Dabice says of the song:

“‘Nothing Like’ is pure fantasy. Originally inspired by a stoned out night 6 years ago spent watching an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer in which Buffy is forced to kill her lover, Angel, before he destroys the world. The song existed in fragments until it finally met its final form last year. Young love is so often all consuming, dangerous, and heightened to mythological proportions – ‘Nothing Like’ sought to mix the balance of both the light feelings of new love and the absolute depths that obsession can bring you to.

“Nothing Like” once again sees Mannequin Pussy veering towards dreampop (as they did on previous single “I Don’t Know You”), with shuffling drums encouraging on a bleary guitar romp. It makes for the perfect setting for Dabice’s spaced-out and loved-up lyricism; “Nothing like the taste of you / I whisper into it / Words I won’t admit” she softly coos. The song takes on a teenage hue as she flips back and forth between contented dreams and tortured regret, the band splashing then charging in conjunction – all in the build up to a flaming, angst-filled finale.
