Manchester-based act Mandy, Indiana are back with a new single called “Magazine” and news of a second record called URGH arriving in February via Sacred Bones. Commenting on the song, vocalist Val Caulfield explains:
“‘Magazine’ is the expression of the frustration and deep-seated violence I felt while attempting to recover from being raped. Just like most victims of sexual assault, I will never get justice, and just like most perpetrators, my attacker will never be punished. My therapist encouraged me to channel my anger into something productive, so here it is: my primal, screaming call for retribution. It is the only way I will ever get to say to my rapist: you hurt me, so I’m going to hurt you.”
As lead singles go, they don’t get more hair-raising or vertiginous than “Magazine”, which reintroduces Mandy, Indiana with an urgency and determination that is several levels up from their already disturbingly intense debut. While the jackhammering beats are sure to rattle your skull, there is still an undoubted insistence to dance among the quartet’s juddering production, with the instrumental interplay maintaining a sense of evil playfulness. Throughout, inimitable vocalist Valentine Caulfield is her usual no-holds-barred self, spitting throat-rasping warnings in her native French, leading us to the song’s finale – a truly brain-flattening sonic maelstrom that leaves you in no doubt about the fury and determination fueling this band.
