Madison Perrott’s latest single “Not Your Wife” would be #1 on the country charts if the Nashville decision-makers paid more attention to powerful female voices than to weird guys with face tattoos. Perrott’s voice ranks right up there with all-time greats like Stevie Nicks, Annie Lennox and Susan Tedeschi.
The song itself is a beautiful blend of many influences: the roots-rock of Creedence Clearwater Revival (especially “Fortunate Son”), a few Brit-pop chords that make it more memorable, and hard-hitting, unapologetic lyrics. Miranda Lambert is one of the few country artists who could successfully cover this song because it’s unflinchingly honest.
Reflecting on the song, Perrott says: “I feel like so often, the narrative after a breakup is that you’re sitting around hoping your ex doesn’t find someone new. But that’s not how I felt. ‘Not Your Wife’ is a playful, bold anthem about owning the freedom you feel when you know you made the right call. It’s like leaving a crumpled napkin with a kiss on it, saying, ‘Bye, don’t miss me too much!’”
One of Perrott’s first singles was the masterful “The Fixer”, perhaps the finest song ever written about a woman breaking free from co-dependency. Madison Perrott clearly has the talent to be a major force in both pop and country.
