Lonnie Holley shares details of new album, finds power in kindness on “Protest With Love”

Multi-disciplinary artist Lonnie Holley will release his new album, Tonky, on March 21 via Jagjaguwar. Featuring guest spots from Mary Lattimore, Angel Bat Dawid, Joe Minter, Open Mike Eagle, Alabaster de Plume, Isaac Brock, billy woods, Jesca Hoop, and Saul Williams, the record is a testament to Holley’s improvisational and collaborative creativity. His last record, 2023’s acclaimed Oh Me Oh My, brought Holley some overdue attention, delivering his brilliant spontaneity to a new generation of artists and audiences.

For our first look into the inner workings of Tonky, Holley has shared “Protest With Love”, a track that pleads with people to “let love be your weapon”. It’s a brilliant piece of electronic pop and rock that combines the quixotic experiments of So-era Peter Gabriel with the genre-blurring ideologies of TV on the Radio. The only known geography for these sounds is the wild expanse found in Holley’s subconscious, a vast expanse of malleable sonic terrain that defies easy categorization and aligns itself with the thumping pulses of his heart.
