The latest album Infinity Pool from Scandinavian electro-pop four-piece When Saints Go Machine feels as far away from the bright, organized pop of their debut as you can imagine. When going into the studio for the recording sessions for this album, the band did have the intention to keep to their former practices but the initial sessions just didn’t feel right to them–something was missing. So they broke apart and recorded the songs in bits and pieces, welding them together at a later time. This disjointed method resulted in a sound far more synthetic and darker than anything found on their first record. We’ve already heard previous single “Love and Respect,” which featured a guest verse from Killer Mike. And now we have “Iodine,” a percussive thumper slathered with hyperactive synths and frontman Nikolaj Manuel Vonsild’s quietly affecting falsetto which quickly reaches up into the rafters. Not content to simply emote but wanting to get down between the notes, Vonsild and the band make a breathtaking whole from these disparate pieces. Listen to “Iodine” below.
