Since the release of their 2009 debut, Cold Fish, Indiana’s wiry indie rock merchants TV Ghost have seen the expansion of their post-punk surge veer into something far more atmospheric and moody. As dramatic a turn as the band took from Cold Fish to their sophomore record, Mass Dream, the band’s continued shift toward complex textures and multi-faceted rhythms have yielded a surprisingly varied range of sounds on their forthcoming album, Disconnect (out September 3rd via In The Red Records).
For the lead single, the band has chosen one of their most distinctly prickly tracks yet. “Elevator” feels jagged and astringent like the best of X or The Pixies, but with the same pop melodicism that made those bands so memorable. Singer Tim Gick’s voice is shrouded in waves of unspooling guitars and masked percussion. Enveloping everything in a welcome haze of distortion, the band submerge themselves in the sounds of their post-punk forebears, but rather then losing any sense of insular identity, TV Ghost create something that makes a clear connection to those seminal artists while still painting a clear picture of where they’re heading as a band.
