Recent Mexican Summer signee Travis Bretzer has been churning out off-beat pop music for years now but only recently has he had the support of a label behind him. His day job of writing radio jingles provides for a suitable segue into his quirky pop melodies—which bear a striking resemblance to the work of bands like Orange Juice and Prefab Sprout. The low-key and oftentimes lo-fi approach that Bretzer has taken on his upcoming Making Love EP, which is due out July 23rd, places him alongside recent idiosyncratic rockers like Mac DeMarco—which makes sense given that Bretzer grew up playing in bands with DeMarco in Edmonton (Alberta, Canada). He recently released “Trying To Learn,” the first single from his forthcoming EP, and with its calmly sung sense of hesitation and spry acoustic fretwork, he makes this direct and personal narrative roll with an undercurrent of nervous anxiety. He’s young and still trying to figure everything out—aren’t we all? Stream “Trying To Learn” below.
