Gainesville, FL residents Morningbell are set to self-release their sixth album Boa Noite on May 21st. The band has never been too keen to rely on traditional musical methods–they’ve previously released music on custom-made USB cards and in the format of a choose-your-own-adventure album. And as a result of this sense of musical exploration, the band avoids easy categorization. Drawing inspiration from romantic classical music, African field recordings, Hungarian folk music, and the poems of Jorge Luis Borges (not to mention a score of other disparate influences), the music on Boa Noite sounds appropriately complex and dizzying. Wanting to incorporate a full backing orchestra but not having the access to one, the band pieced together a makeshift orchestra from half a dozen sessions with multiple classical musicians. This attitude of musical construction stands at the heart of the band’s densely layered aesthetic. They’ve just released the first single “We Have Eyes As Well As Ears” from the record and you can check it out below.
