In addition to the new Shearwater live album on their bandcamp page, singer Jonathan Meiburg has uploaded a couple of solo songs. The pair are easier to look at as an EP than a single, since he has decided to give the pair a name that is completely separate from the song names – Why I Love My Home (songs for Charles Burchfield).
The pair were written for a performance at the opening of an exhibition of Charles Burchfield’s paintings at the Whitney Museum. Meiburg was joined by Wye Oak’s Andy Stack for the performance, who added keyboards, melodica and wildlife samples. The songs will be released on 12″ vinyl for Graveface Records’ charity singles, but you can stream them below or buy them at Shearwater’s Bandcamp for $4.50.
The two songs were based on Burchfield Paintings; “Hymn to the Valences” is inspired by Two Ravines and The Song of the Telegraph, and “The Moth and the Milky Way” was based on The Sphinx and the Milky Way.
