Many of us here at BPM are big fans of the late, great Aaliyah. So, when rumors began to surface that Young Money star Drake would produce an entire posthumous collection of her material, feelings were mixed. Aaliyah’s legacy has been neglected for years. True, this avoided the pitfalls of a posthumous LP so terrible as the likes of Michael Jackson have been treated to, but it also led to a failure to continue her influence over a new generation of listeners.
So, perhaps, in a way Drake is doing her a favor. He’s certainly long boasted what borders on an obsession for the singer he never met. Yet, with Drake under scrutiny as to how long his one-note wounded lover boy routine can last him, it’s hard not to find the move exploitative, yet another ploy for the Canadian to simply borrow from others’ playbooks.
Timbaland, Aaliyah’s key contributor, has already spoken out against Drake controlling the project, and with Kanye already waiting in line to claim his sound back, we’ve decided to bring you this mercifully Drake-less version of Aaliyah’s latest, “Enough Said”. Enjoy.
