It’s too bad that actors and writers are striking in Hollywood, because Leni Black’s new single “NVM” would be a perfect fit for the next Maya Hawke movie. It’s a hooky, captivating song that grabs you from the get-go.
“NVM” is, of course, social media shorthand for “never mind.” The Nashville artist says, “The song came first as a joke because I said it would be funny to have a song title that just read “NVM”. At the time I was talking to this guy I met on my month-long travels in Europe. My co-producer Israel McFarland started messing around with beats and we began recreating the experience I had in Europe by incorporating sound bits from my travels, like my friend Rebecca saying “you look amazing”, referring to “Cefalu beach” where we were having a beach vacation in Sicily and then finally the very end of the song that captures a piece of the conversation I was having with my love interest at the time. The song sheds light on my often-not-written-about wild side. I enjoy falling in love and being in the moment and there’s nothing better than a summer fling!”
This summer, Black has shadowed Taylor Swift all across America, playing what she calls “Taylor Pre-Game Shows” in Eras tour stops like Denver, Seattle and NYC. “NVM” definitely has Swiftian vocal command and sonic allure.
Leni’s European fling was even shorter than Taylor’s hook-up with Matt Healy, but at least it produced this confident, compelling single.
