Laura Marling is releasing her new album Patters in Repeat at the end of October and has this week shared a new single – the album opener “Child Of Mine”.
Marling reports that the song was written while “bouncing my daughter in her bouncer when she was four weeks old.”
She adds: “I hadn’t sat down to write. It’d been a while since I’d picked up the guitar, just to pass the time, so maybe that did the trick. I wrote the lullaby soon after and thought ‘OK, maybe I could make a record this year’”.
The song is directed towards her miniature daughter and encompasses a world of fears and hopes for her future. In just her words and the timbre of her voice, a whole universe of adoration and beauty is captured, but it’s augmented to crystalline perfection by choral adornments and regal string arrangements. While Marling has never been anything other than exemplary as a songwriter, “Child Of Mine” suggests that her motherhood era will be another step up.
