Kim Gordon is back with a new album, just two years removed from 2024’s The Collective. Matador Records will once again play host to her music, with Play Me arriving on March 13 via the venerable indie stalwart. She once again works with producer Justin Raisen, and the two continue their refinement of the artful noise they began on Gordon’s solo debut, No Home Record, back in 2019.
“We wanted the songs to be short,” Gordon says of her ongoing collaboration with Raisen. “We wanted to do it really fast. It’s more focused, and maybe more confident. I always kind of work off of rhythms, and I knew I wanted it to be even more beat-oriented than the last one. Justin really gets my voice and my lyrics, and he understands how I work—that came forth even more on this record.“
On lead single, “Not Today”, she doesn’t open with some brutal barrage but, instead, lets her voice wander and document the woozy landscape surrounding her. Distortion comes in thin ribbons, shivering in the cool evening air — her voice a thing of monumental weight, a supernova on the verge of some cosmic eruption.
“I started singing in a way I hadn’t sung in a long time,” explains Gordon. “This other voice came out.“
The accompanying video was directed by Rodarte fashion label founders and filmmakers Kate and Laura Mulleavy with director of photography Christopher Blauvelt. “She was our idol, and we vividly remember fitting the dress with her in NYC,” the Mulleavy’s explain. “When we started to conceptualize the video, Kim brought up wearing the dress, which we knew was perfect for the video idea.“
