That’s right, folks. Just in from The Fader, Black Hippy have very recently, universally, signed with Interscope. Lamar’s upcoming debut, Good Kid in a Mad City, will be released jointly by his own imprint and Aftermath/Interscope. Albums from the other members, Schoolboy Q, Ab-Soul, and Jay Rock will all be released with the same strategy following their ringleader’s moment.
While Aftermath has meant stagnation for some artists under the guidance of a notoriously perfectionist label head in Dr. Dre, he has an undeniable track record with guys such as Game, Eminem, and 50 Cent; hopefully this move will spell mainstream success for Lamar and his crew. If anything, the signing is unsurprising, considering K.Dot’s already standing connection with Dre. What will this mean for the hyped MC? Certainly some great beats, perhaps even a collab with Shady. Whether this will entirely shift hype – and Dre’s attention – away from other Aftermath artists, such as Slim the Mobster, remains to be seen. More details as they emerge.
