Julia Holter’s playfulness fizzes on “The Laugh Is In The Eyes”

Julia Holter has released a new track called “The Laugh Is In The Eyes”, which came out of the sessions for her wonderful recent album Something In The Room She Moves. She says:

“‘The Laugh Is in the Eyes’ came out of the Something in the Room She Moves writing sessions and it shares that album’s devotion to transformation and bodily senses. There’s a loopy restlessness, a rhythmic 5ness alongside a 4ness, a circle and a square. Like in the song ‘Spinning,’ a surprise awakening awaits in the state of ‘night’—from stagnancy to the anticipation of flowers, flutes, feeling.”

The song would have naturally slotted into Holter’s last album as it retains the same unpredictable bounciness and sheer sparkling joy that was on show across that record. The “loopy restlessness” she describes is utterly addictive and infecting, with her various synths and her band’s flowing additions springing around in psychedelic shapes and textures, always offering something new with each passing bar. There’s an uncanny reflection of intimate interaction in what she creates.
