It’s not like it ever seemed plausible anyway, but when various living Velvet Underground members (minus John Cale) held a forum in New York City last December, a lot of reunion buzz was in the air. However, in a recent interview, Cale was asked about the possibility of the Velvet Underground ever reuniting. He quickly (and clearly) dismissed the notion:
Anyone who wants to reform The Velvet Underground for a series of concerts, to make some money, I understand that, but you can’t do that. We don’t have Sterling [Morrison] any more. If I said that was something I was intrigued by, people would think I was cynical.
Sterling Morrison was a founding member and guitarist of the band. He died in 1995, but is Morrison’s absence the only thing deterring Cale from wanting to reunite the band? The group got together temporarily in the early ’90s, and it didn’t exactly work out, due to disagreements between Cale and Lou Reed. Perhaps the real problem is that Cale and Reed cannot seem to work together.
