Jockstrap have returned after their Wicked City EP (one of our EPs of 2020) with the news that they’ve signed to Rough Trade. They’ve also shared a new song called “50/50”, which started as a beat that Taylor Skye made while in bed recovering from tonsillitis.
There’s no remaining in bed while listening to the final version of “50/50” though, as Georgia Ellery quickly calls us to attention with her holler, which then gets mangled into a crunchy beat. As usual for Jockstrap, the song doesn’t bear any kind of resemblance to structure, shapeshifting like a Transformer through different modes of club-based music, from techno to acid to their own brand of weirdness. Ellery’s words similarly come in patchy emissions, the words, when audible, cascading in from all corners of her mind. It’s a wild ride, which is captured brilliantly in the sweat-filled video from a recent live performance in Hackney.
