As if having Indigo De Souza‘s excellent 2021 Any Shape You Take wasn’t enough for one year, the North Carolina-based artist has shared a cover of Frank Ocean’s “Ivy” in honour of Bandcamp Friday. Speaking sentimentally of the the song and what it means to her, De Souza says of her take:
“I deeply love Frank Ocean’s songs and ‘Ivy’ has a truly special place in my heart. I have cried many times to this song and can see so much of my own inner world in it. I wanted to fully embody the song myself in honour of its gorgeous existence. Thank you, Frank Ocean.”
Full of warmth and a tender vocal take, De Souza begins with a simple key synth chords before multi-track vocals, slick bass, and a driving percussive clack come into the mix. The song comes with a self-shot video from De Souza recording the vocals for the track in her hallway. With additional phone videos of her travelling and dancing (and dancing with her dog), the song feels like her own well-worn anthem she has been singing to us for years.
