Australian fave Grace Cummings has released a new single called “Common Man”. It’s the second glimpse of her upcoming album, Ramona, after “On and On”. Of the new song, she says:
“This song is about being a colorful bird and never, ever wanting to be a pigeon. Somebody I used to know wrote a song called common man about working nine to five and coming home and having a cup of tea and going to bed and it made me want to have a fucking panic attack. I wish I could tell people it was about riding off into the distance on the back of a white horse with a Cowboy in Austin Texas, but it’s not.”
The cantering rhythm and skimming guitar of “Common Man”, with subtle inflections of piano and organ, creates a dusty atmosphere where eagles fly above. Cummings’ rich voice is left plenty of space to shine, capturing the arid atmosphere in her all-encompassing delivery. She gallops into the chorus where she takes up the role of the cocksure cowboy, riding away from all that’s boring and small fry – “I can’t stand to be the common man,” she announces. When you have musical prowess like this, why would you?
