UPDATE: This has been dnied by the band.
Further projects from Gorillaz had seemed unlikely or at best far off, but it seems like the band are officially done for good now.
The UK’s newspaper The People has a report that the two masterminds behind the cartoon band, Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett, have decided to go their separate ways after a series of big rows while on tour.
The article (which you can see a scan of below) claims that “Jamie became frustrated at how much time Damon was giving to his many other projects. Damon, meanwhile, was less than impressed with Jamie’s party lifestyle. With relations so bad they have decided to go their separate ways.”
The author also claims to have been told that “things haven’t been great for a while, so it was hardly a surprise when this came to a head the other week. There’s been a massive argument that has basically ended things, Jamie’s gone abroad to be with his girlfriend, while Damon is busy with his opera and with the return of Blur. For now it looks like it could be the end of Gorillaz.”
I would be sceptical of the source but there doesn’t seem to be any other reason not to believe it and it follows on from Albarn’s long speech given at the last concert Gorillaz played in New Zealand (seen here) which was in itself out of the ordinary because Albarn usually does not talk at Gorillaz concerts.
On a positive note however, it seems that with this news and Graham Coxon’s tweet the other day the full-on Blur reunion is definitely happening.
