Gilla Band spinoff The Null Club teams with Mandy, Indiana for debut single “Slip Angle”

Gilla Band guitarist Alan Duggan Borges has launched his new solo project The Null Club, announcing a debut three-track release and live shows. The self-titled EP, which is out on 4 April, has a guest vocalist on each track: ELUCID, Faris Badwan of The Horrors and Valentine Caulfield of Mandy, Indiana.

The Caulfield-featuring “Slip Angle” is first to be shared, with Borges saying: “This would be the most techno inspired track. I tried to mix techno and noise with this one. I first saw Mandy, Indiana in Manchester at the psych fest in 2021. We managed to say hello, and from there I reached out to Val to see if she would be interested in working on the track. Thankfully she was into it. I sent her on the instrumental and she came back with rough vocals using the mic from headphones for phones. We re-recorded the vocals in her home in Manchester in 2021 surrounded by her cats, but actually kept some of the headphone takes in the track.”

Perhaps predictably, “Slip Angle” finds a happily thrilling middle ground between Gilla Band and Mandy, Indiana. Insistent beats and skull-buzzing synth set the stage for a frantic track, with Caulfield coming in and singing in her magnetic and hypnotic French; imploring us on and warning us back with equal measure. Borges continues building the tension until it reaches an alarming peak that feels like your brain is boiling and your heart is pumping out of your chest – but euphorically, if you’re into that kind of thing.
