Ghais Guevara unlocks new doors on “Camera Shy”, announces album

Philadelphia rapper Ghais Guevara has announced his new album Goyard Ibn Said, which will be out on 24 January through Fat Possum. It will be his debut album, following up highly promising projects including 2022’s BPM Recommended There Will Be No Super-Slave.

He has shared the lead single and album centrepiece “Camera Shy”, saying: “I remember the day I figured out the hook for this beat, I told the voice chat “Yo we got one”. It definitely feels like *the* stylistic shift for me. As if I earned enough XP to unlock hitmaker status lol.”

That feeling of a “hit” is instant in the looped and warped soul sample that introduces “Camera Shy”, and further emphasised when the meaty beat pops in. Ghais leans into the sumptuous sounds, rapping about rubbing shoulders with high rollers and sweeping a woman off her feet with his worldly ways and effortless style. It’s pure confidence from the rapper, and it should be – he has the talent to go anywhere he wants.

The video for “Camera Shy” was directed by Rhys Scarabosio who says: “Ghais had a natural photographic quality to him you don’t always come by. When light hit him, it wasn’t difficult to find something pleasing. We shot on 16mm film to even further emphasize that star power he holds.”
