I’ve spent the majority of the last couple of months in Central Florida and though the local scene can seem pretty dire at times, the acts on local electronic label Relief In Abstract have been a major bright spot. Their latest release comes courtesy of 17-year-old beatmaker Grant Peyton. With a full length out this year already under his GRANT moniker and a production credit on fellow Floridian Kitty Pryde‘s debut EP, it’s clear that the kid stays busy as his latest effort hit bandcamp last Friday. His sample based beats land him somewhere in some bizarre middle ground of the Shlohmos and Teebses of the world and his beloved trap rap producers. It’s 18 minutes of smooth jazzy samples layered with clattering drum hits and a few listens in it sounds as moving as the work of producers many years his senior. Check out Beat Tape, Vol 1 (featuring an instrumental take of his Kitty Pryde collab) below or head on over to GRANT’s Bandcamp for a free download.
