Deafheaven observe a soul losing himself to numbness on the monumental “Heathen”

Deafheaven have a new album called Lonely People With Power arriving in a month’s time and following on from lead single “Magnolia” they’ve now followed it up with another teaser called “Heathen”.

The first section of the new song harkens back to previous album Infinite Granite with its gliding shoegaze approach, providing a romantically gothic setting for crooned reflections such as “Oh, he lies to feel like he is someone new / Oh, why don’t we leave and go to somewhere new?”. However, this placid contemplation soon explodes into a melee, Deafheaven’s heavier proclivities bursting into the picture with python-like riffs, demonic drumming and George Clarke’s razor blade howl. There is a brief reprieve of prismatic beauty before the onslaught returns with Clark screaming about someone “filled with the sin of power / This is what he’s destined for / In this ugly hour”. “Heathen” is a deft balancing act between the two sides of Deafheaven’s style that opens up new corridors we hope to hear explored on their forthcoming album.
