Deafheaven have announced details regarding their forthcoming album, Lonely People with Power, which is due out March 28 via Roadrunner Records. They’ve once again teamed up with producer Justin Meldal-Johnsen (who handled the boards for the band’s 2021 opus Infinite Granite) and enlisted the voice talents of Jae Matthews of Boy Harsher and Paul Banks of Interpol. The record purports to be their most ambitious release to date and lead single “Magnolia” towers appropriately over its surroundings.
Where Infinite Granite found them experimenting with shoegaze and more melody-driven rhythms, “Magnolia” appears to be a return to form for the idiosyncratic metallurgists. It offers a brutally concussive blast of lacerating guitars and tectonic percussion, a full-throttle assault on your senses that refuses to be restrained by any expectations resulting from past histories. Everything withers under its gaze, and nothing but blackened ruins are left in its wake. Continents are shifted, and Deafheaven revel in the ensuing geological movements.
They’ve also shared a video for the song, which was directed by Sean Stout and Chelsea Jade. Watch the clip below and check out the band’s upcoming tour dates, though the schedule is sure to expand very soon.
